Alpacas are native of the Andes Mountains
in South America, they live on the
high Alti-plano at an altitude of 12000 ft approx. Our herd live and
thrive
in a spectacular location 600ft above sea level in the Cotswolds.
Up until 1995 there were only a few hundred
alpaca in this country and of
these the majority originated from zoo stock. There are now upwards
of 10000
alpaca in this country.
Alpacas were treasured by the ancient
Inca civilisation and were the providers
of a luxurious fibre for clothing royalty. Alpaca fibre is akin to cashmere
and very sort after. They require shearing once a year and
Produce roughly 3.5 kg of fibre for processing.
Alpacas can be stocked at around 5 or
6 to an acre, when we carried out our
business plan for Charity barn we looked carefully at many traditional
animals
as we did not have enough land to make a profit also most of these animals
would have to be sent to market to be slaughtered which was not what
we wanted.
Alpacas live for around 20 years are
bred for both fibre and profit and are
Allowed to live out their natural life, which was just what we wanted,
A touch of the good life where every one wins.
Alpacas are intelligent and inquisitive
animals, all of our animals are named
And each one is a character in their own right.
They are a herd animal and therefore
must never be kept alone 2-3 being the
Minimum requirement.
Alpacas are straight forward to keep
they require checking as with all
livestock at least twice a day. Vaccinating for clostridia disease and
worming six monthly, toe nail clipping around five times a year.
Accoyo is the world famous alpaca herd
of Don Julio Barreda of Peru.
In our herd are some of the best genetics
available in the UK today such as
Don Carlos & Don Camillo ribbon winning Peruvian Accoyo stud males
Or Machos. Our policy is to continue to breed up and improve our herd
