About Alpacas:
Alpacas are native of the Andes Mountains in South America, they live on the high Alti-plano at an altitude of 12,000 ft approx. Our herd live and thrive in a spectacular location 600ft above sea level in the Cotswolds.
Up until 1995 there were only a few hundred alpaca in this country and of these the majority originated from zoo stock. There are now upwards of 27,000 alpaca in this country.
Alpacas were treasured by the ancient Inca civilisation and were the providers of a luxurious fibre for clothing royalty. Alpaca fibre is akin to cashmere and very sought after. They require shearing once a year and produce roughly 3.5 kg of fibre for processing.
